Mercedes 280 SE Coupé 1969
The styling of the 111 coupé was a great success, embodying the luxury, elegance and refinement of the 1960s. Its beautiful lines were drawn by Paul Bracq and cannot fail to move the onlooker. It was built from 1961 to 1971, with six-cylinder engines of 2.2, 2.5, 2.8 and 3.0 litres, and a 3.5-litre V8, all of them fuel-injected. Roomy and comfortable, it could transport four passengers with their luggage at speed over long distances. The car left its mark on its period, thanks to its presence and inherent class. Contrary to what may sometimes be thought, it was based on the saloon from the same period, the W111, also known as the ‘Fintail’ on account of the pointed shape of its rear wings. It was the inspiration for the series that followed, the W108, and used the same engines while keeping the same structure from 1960. The few examples in perfect condition which still travel our roads today are rare and do not go unnoticed.
The model presented here
This model was delivered new in Paris on 5 September 1969. It was one of the 5187 cars built between 1968 and 1971 with a 160bhp six-cylinder engine. It was also one of the first with the new wider and lower radiator grille and new bumpers, identical to those fitted to the 3.5-litre V8 model. This coupé is in exceptional original condition. Only its paintwork – which had faded over the years – was recently redone to perfection, restoring the car’s excellent appearance to when it was new. The navy blue leather upholstery is in remarkable condition and goes splendidly with the white bodywork. The glass and chrome are in perfect order and accentuate the car’s elegant lines. It has covered only 139,000km (86,000 miles) in the hands of two owners. It has always been maintained, with the result that its mechanical condition allows it to be driven as it was in its time. The underbody, engine bay and boot floor are also original and in amazing condition. The distinctive feature of this example is that it was supplied from the factory with a five-speed manual gearbox. Not only is this rare, but it makes the car sportier to drive and significantly reduces the engine speed on motorways. Thanks to its remarkable condition and unusual equipment, this car is truly a delight to drive. It will be serviced and sold with a 12-month warranty in the Mercedes-Benz dealer network.
