BMW 2000 CA 1968
At the start of the 1960s, BMW was experiencing serious difficulties. Its range of cars was becoming dated and they were unreliable too, with the result that sales plummeted. Its response was to create an entirely new saloon, which was modern, dynamic and solidly built. The 1500 allowed BMW to re-establish its financial stability and look to the future with greater serenity. It needed now to move upmarket. It was at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1965 that the Bavarian car maker presented the 2000 C, its new coupé. With bodywork by Karmann, the car was elegant and luxurious. The absence of a central pillar between the electrically-operated front and rear windows was pleasingly original and refined. The interior featured velour or leather seats and high-quality wood, chrome and plastic trim. An all-new two-litre four-cylinder engine was designed for it. This produced 100bhp or 120bhp, depending on whether it was fitted with single or twin carburettors. This reliable, responsive engine was used in BMW’s later models (the 3 and 5 Series until 1977). The coupé had a four-speed manual gearbox, with automatic transmission an option on the 100bhp version. The model helped develop the company’s sporting image by competing in various events. Its film appearances also come to mind. Notably in The Brain, where its electric radio aerial became caught up in the pullover of a jealous Sicilian mafioso, stripping it off him one strand at a time, while behind the wheel his little sister listened spellbound to Colonel Matthews, as he prepared to carry out a brilliant robbery from a postal train. Its high build quality and the standard of the materials used enabled the company to continue its development and establish its own identity. The 2000 coupé was produced in quite limited numbers, with a total for all models of only 12,000 cars built. As a result, few cars remain today and they are rarely seen on the road. In 1969, its successor, codenamed the E9, was launched. Available only with six-cylinder engines and priced 30% higher than the 2000, it was aimed, however, at a different and more affluent clientele.
The model offered for sale
The model offered for sale was delivered new in Germany on 22 August 1968. It is one of the 3249 2000 C coupés built with automatic transmission. Apart from its rarity, the appeal of this car lies in its exceptional original condition. It has never been restored and has covered only 67,000km. There is no corrosion whatsoever, the paintwork is perfect and the interior looks like new. The mechanical components have been overhauled, so that the car can be used in the best possible conditions. The automatic gearbox is remarkably smooth. To drive it is to be taken back fifty years. This coupé stands out from the rest and deserves to find a home in a collection of equally rare cars. It will be sold serviced and with a 12-month warranty.
