Description

BENTLEY Flying Spur

Bentley was founded in 1919 by the English engineer Walter Owen Bentley. A motorsport enthusiast, he took the company in the same direction, creating racing cars from the start. In 1924, his 3-Litre sports model won the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This success would be repeated from 1927–1930. There were no professional racing drivers at the wheel of these winning cars, only well-to-do amateurs, enthusiastic ‘gentlemen drivers’ spurred on by a sense of adventure. The stock market crash in 1929 stopped the rise of the young British firm. The high price of its luxurious models for the public were no longer appropriate. It was Rolls-Royce who, in a roundabout way, bought Bentley in 1931. To the fame Bentley had won through racing, Rolls-Royce added its reputation for excellence as a maker of very up-market models with sporting connotations. The cars produced by the two companies were in fact very close cousins. In particular, until 2004 all Bentley chassis came from Rolls-Royce. In 1998, the group was bought by the car giant Volkswagen. Since then, the two brands have shared many components and R&D projects.

The Bentley Flying Spur was presented at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show. It was an exceptional luxury saloon. It used the chassis from the VW Phaeton and was powered by an incredible 6-litre W12 engine with twin turbochargers developing 560bhp, enough to launch it from 0-100kph in 4.5 seconds and make it the fastest saloon in the world (312kph). Thanks to a six-speed ZF ‘Tiptronic’ transmission, adaptive air suspension and four-wheel drive, the Flying Spur was a formidable car on the road. Despite its size and weight, it proved more capable than many sports cars of the time. In addition, it was extraordinarily comfortable and incomparably luxurious. Built at Crewe in England, the saloon was essentially assembled by hand. All the technical features to be found inside the car, as well as the finely crafted, noble materials are an invitation to travel to another world, smoothly and at supersonic speed.

To buy a Flying Spur is to treat yourself to the ultimate in cars, to enter into a world of British elegance and to keep alive the memory of Bentley’s prestigious heyday.
