MERCEDES 280 SE W116 1980
The Mercedes W116 replaced the W108 at the end of 1972 and made way for the W126 in 1980. As was often the case with Mercedes, the top-of-the-line series carried over some of the technology which had been tried and tested a few years earlier on models lower down the range. Its front suspension was taken from the W114/115, as was its twin overhead cam six-cylinder engine. A lot of work was done on the car’s passive safety and it incorporated several features in the event of an accident, including inertia-reel seatbelts, a safety steering wheel and padded doors and dashboard. Its comfort, silence and roadholding were all considerably improved on its predecessor. The car was modern to drive but still looked like a ‘proper’ Mercedes with its twin chrome bumpers and squared-off styling. The W126 which replaced it kept much of its engineering, but its styling and the materials used in its construction were markedly different. Equipped with a six-cylinder engine or 3.5, 4.5 and 6.9-litre V8s for the European market, more than 473,000 of these luxurious saloons were built worldwide. Today, however, few examples remain in good original condition after several decades, without any corrosion and with a low mileage.
The model offered for sale
The car presented here is a 185bhp 280 SE. It was one of the last models built, as it was registered in France on 22 July 1980. It is fitted with automatic transmission, cruise control, alloy wheels and a magnificent ‘Pullman’ interior in near-new condition. It is in excellent order, with completely original paintwork. It has covered only 53,500km (33,200 miles) and has had only one owner, as the sales invoice confirms. It is exceptional to find a Mercedes W116 in such condition. It will be prepared for sale and sold with a 12–month mechanical warranty in the Mercedes-Benz dealer network.
