Jaguar XK150 S Roadster
At the London Motor Show in 1948, three years after the end of the Second World War, William Lyons, the founder and chairman of Jaguar, presented his completely new prototype. It was an elegantly styled roadster powered by a sporty, modern engine. It was not intended to be a production model, but proved such a resounding success that the company decided to put it on sale in 1949 as the XK120. The ‘120’ in its name referred to the top speed of 120mph (193kph) it achieved on test. The first car was delivered to the American actor Clark Gable. Its performance, styling, design and driving position meant it could be described as a sports car. In 1954, the XK140 was launched: it was more modern and had rack-and-pinion steering which provided more precise handling. But it was in 1957 that the new XK150 introduced significant changes. It was equipped with disc brakes. The car’s more rounded styling and single-piece curved windscreen gave it more of the look of a GT than a racing car. Its characteristics enabled Jaguar to increase sales of the model in North America. The 3.4-litre XK engine used when it was launched was increased to 3.8 litres a year later. Fitted with an ‘S’-type cylinder head which could be recognised by its gold paint, the 3.8 produced 265bhp (DIN) and offered high performance which could be exploited relatively easily thanks to the technical changes made to the car. The XK150 was initially built as a coupé, before a convertible was offered a year later, followed by a roadster, the version most sought after today. In 1961, it made way for the legendary E-type, which used the same engine as the XK150 S and also left its mark on its period.
The model presented here
The model presented here was delivered new in France on 3 February 1960. It is a rare Roadster version fitted with the 3.8-litre engine with an ‘S’ cylinder head developing 265bhp. A high-quality restoration was carried out some ten years ago. The car is in perfect overall condition and running order, allowing the driver to enjoy it in the best possible conditions. All the mechanical components, as well as its ‘Pastel blue’ colour, are original, adding to the charm this roadster exudes. It will be prepared for sale and guaranteed for 12 months.
