Mercedes 560 SL
In April 1971, Mercedes introduced the successor to the legendary ‘Pagoda’. Codenamed the R107, this quick, modern roadster met with huge success and more than 300,000 were built until August 1989. During its long career, it was fitted with V8 engines from 3.5 to 5.6 litres in capacity and an in-line ‘six’ of 2.8 and then 3.0 litres. The model was exported in large numbers to the United States and left its mark on the American cinema, thanks to the many films in which it appeared. Today, this cabriolet is highly sought-after: apart from the driving enjoyment that it brings, it changes hands at lower prices than those for the ‘Pagoda’ and it is very likely that these will increase in the years to come. Buying an R107 therefore combines pleasure and a good investment. Few examples remain in good condition, free from corrosion and with low mileage. But these are the cars that should be favoured, as they will become harder and harder to find.
The model presented here
The model presented here was delivered new in California on 28 June 1986. It is a 560 SL, powered by the powerful and flexible 231bhp V8. It is fully equipped, as was expected by American customers. The specification of this roadster includes automatic climate control, ABS brakes, electric windows and a superb black leather interior, which goes perfectly with its red paintwork. This combination of colours emphasises the American aspect of the car and will rekindle memories of those who knew the model when they stayed in America. It has covered only 102,000km and is in perfect condition. It runs and drives as it did originally. Always well maintained and never restored, this is an interesting example, full of charm, which recalls the prestige Mercedes-Benz enjoyed in the United States at the end of the last century. It will be sold serviced and with a 12-month warranty.
