Peugeot 504 Saloon
The Peugeot 504 was a real success commercially. With nearly four million cars built from 1968 – 1983 , it was sold as a saloon, estate, coupé, convertible and pick-up. It competed in numerous rallies and was the travelling companion of many high-mileage users, including taxi drivers and sales reps, who appreciated its comfort, reliability and solid build.
Initially intended to be presented in June 1968, the 504 saloon was only introduced in September, due to the events in May that year. It was built at Sochaux. When it was launched, it was fitted with a 1.8-litre engine, developing 82bhp in carburettor form or 97bhp (DIN) with Kugelfischer fuel injection. It was Peugeot’s first saloon with all-round independent suspension and solid disc brakes at front and rear. At the end of 1970, the engine capacity was increased to 2 litres, with power rising to 93bhp for the carburettor version and 104bhp with fuel injection. Apart from this gain in power, which allowed the car to reach a top speed of 172kph (107mph), a 10% increase in torque offered a welcome improvement in flexibility. It was a pleasant place to be behind the wheel. The car was extremely comfortable, roomy and stable, with good roadholding and powerful brakes. Without claiming to be a sports car, the saloon could boast performance which was more than respectable for its time. Its qualities made it a resounding success with high-mileage users and families who appreciated its comfort and the generous space it offered (with a 450dm3/15.9ft3 boot). We all have a nostalgic image of the 504 in our minds. It was also a frequent sight on the screen. We particularly remember Claude Zidi’s film The Wing or the Thigh where a 504 driven by one of Tricatel’s henchmen chases Louis de Funès’ Mercedes limousine in an incredible series of skids and stunts. It was so great a success that the saloon remained in production until 1983, even though its successor, the 505 – which used the same platform – had been launched four years earlier. It was even built in Argentina, Kenya and Nigeria until 2005 in estate and pick-up form. Its robust construction is not a legend. In Africa, many of them are still being driven every day. The manufacturing processes used at the time did not offer effective protection against corrosion and the ravages of time. It is difficult therefore to find an example today in perfect original condition and with a low mileage.
The model presented here
The model we are offering is a rare gem. It is an Injection model, fitted with automatic transmission – an option available with this engine from 1971 – and a sunroof. The saloon was delivered new in Paris on 13 June 1972 and has had only two owners. It is in stunning overall condition. Despite being fifty years old, the car is almost as new, thanks to its incredibly low mileage of just 7800km (4850 miles) and having been perfectly preserved in the dry and out of direct light. The original white paintwork has kept its shine, while the dark red velour interior remains as soft as ever. There is not the slightest sign of corrosion and everything is original! It is as if the car had been put in a glass case, unaffected by the passage of time. Inside the car, you are taken back fifty years. The plastic trim, cloth and glass are like new. It runs exceptionally well, in keeping with in its extraordinary condition. Everything is perfect. The engine purrs just as it did when the car left the factory. The automatic gearbox is a model of creamy smoothness. This is a rare collector’s item, probably one of the finest surviving examples. Its buyer will not only be acquiring a Peugeot 504, but will become the owner of a French legend, in unique condition. A full service has been carried out and the car will be sold with a 12-month guarantee.
